About this session

Key Stage 5 | Subject: History | Topics: Elizabethans, Tudors | Session Type: Study Day Partnership

A window into men’s souls? Elizabeth experienced the Tower of London as both prisoner and princess, but her most potent legacy comes from the physical memories created by those held on religious charges during her reign.

In this session students will analyse the evidence of the Tower buildings, Queen Elizabeth I’s own letters and other documentary sources.

Through the physical remains of prison and palace, students will evaluate how far the Tower of London reflects a state national turmoil through succession crises, assassination plots and religious unrest during the apparent ‘Golden Age’ of this complex queen.

This study day will also include a session on using portraiture as historical evidence at the National Portrait Gallery.
