As part of the 500th anniversary celebrations of the Field of Cloth of Gold, join Melita Thomas and Deborah Roil of the Tudor Times blog as they talk about the journey of Henry VIII and his first wife to this historic summit.
The Field of Cloth of Gold was the greatest opportunity Henry VIII ever had to show his wealth, his culture and his brilliance to Francis I of France, the man whom he considered his greatest rival. To do this, he needed to put on a splendid show, which necessitated him and his wife, Katharine of Aragon, being attended by a retinue which could provide a foil to their own magnificence. Who were the lucky nobles chosen to accompany the king and queen? Where did they stay, how were they served in turn, and what did they do during the event? Tudor Times will look at the Field of Cloth of Gold through the eyes of these men and women - both participants and audience at the spectacle.
